The Farm

Santa Ynez, CA

A modern farmhouse retreat set among Santa Ynez’s rolling oak-studded hills.

Perched atop a narrow hilltop in the Santa Ynez Valley, The Farm unfolds across 20 acres of rolling terrain, where century-old oaks define the landscape. The single-story main residence organizes communal living and private sleeping areas with clarity, prioritizing both family life and entertaining for builder Andrew Patterson, a personal friend and colleague of Christopher Brandon’s. Vaulted ceilings in the central living space soar just under 16 feet, bookended by the entry tower and fireplace, while cornering pocket doors dissolve the boundary between indoors and the pool terrace or front porch. The sleeping wing to the north provides a quiet retreat for family and guests, while a bunkhouse above the garage extends accommodations. A glass-and-metal corridor links the main house and garage, framing views of the surrounding oaks and reinforcing the home’s integration into the landscape. The site was configured deliberately to respond to the sun’s movement, enhancing natural light and shading throughout the day.

Materiality is central to the home’s presence within its landscape. Tumbled Palomino limestone, Western red cedar, smooth-coat stucco, standing-seam metal roofing, and steel-and-glass detailing create a transitional modern farmhouse palette that yields to the land while offering texture, warmth and durability. Wide oak floors flow through the interiors, echoing the cedar-clad ceilings, while the careful siting preserves mature trees and embraces a small vineyard.
